ADHD and PTSD together are showing up more and more in my work with the ADHD community.
My entire business is based on creating connection, so obviously I want to learn how to better serve my clients, and educate people on the connection between the two diagnoses.
So why not do a podcast on the subject?
Allison Arkfeld, MA AMFT, is a Somatic Psychotherapist working out of Long Beach, CA.
When I first emailed Allison about the link between ADHD and PTSD, I did it because I have been following her on Instagram.
It’s true, even though I am constantly telling you not to get your information on social media, I reached out to Allison through direct message. Guilty.
At the conference in November I started to hear rumblings about trauma-informed treatment for ADHD adults. We all know that emotional regulation is a challenge with ADHD.
We are even discussing RSD openly and on social media.
My friend James Ochoa talks about what he calls the, “emotional distress syndrome” in his book below. (Affiliate link. See my full disclosure.)
In episode 305 Allison explains that the traditional model of ADHD, as a brain-based neurodevelopment disorder separate from any somatic symptoms is becoming outdated.
We now know that several somatic diseases are linked to ADHD, and that the ADHD mind works in concert with the body.
There is growing evidence that a multi-modal approach to treating ADHD that includes body work, meditation, medications, traditional therapy, and coaching – holds great benefit.
Unfortunately, many patient don’t have access to this level of treatment.
In this thought-provoking episode you will learn about:
-
Empowerment within the body
-
Using body sensations to self-regulate
-
Multi-modal support for ADHD
-
Real-life applications for polyvagal theory
-
The difficulty in treating PTSD with an ADHD mind
-
The healing power of human connection
-
Defining trauma (it’s not what you think!)
-
Corrective experiences that heal
-
How ADHD and PTSD affect social interactions/interpersonal relationships
This is episode will open yours eyes to the connection between your ADHD mind and your body.
