The emotional tornado of ADHD is a real thing. It has always been there but we’ve just started talking about more it in recent years.

You’ve probably read about emotional dysregulation or rejection sensitive dysphoria at this point, and you might have recognized the symptoms in yourself.

But what about the tornado of emotions that accompanies the actual diagnosis?

For many people diagnosed as adults, the stages of the emotional tornado might feel similar to the stages of grief.

Denial, Relief, Regret, Sorrow, Anger, Guilt. All the emotions show up.

They say that ignorance is bliss. And sometimes, “knowing” doesn’t make things easier, it makes things more complicated.

Surviving the emotional tornado of ADHD takes work.

And probably a bit of support.

You cannot hope to conquer your inner voice, and master your executive functions by taking medication. Or even reading books about ADHD.

Managing your mental health and improving your functionality is a long-term project. And we with ADHD are not always good at playing the long-game.

But we can be persistent. We can learn to ask for help when we need it and to practice self-compassion.

As Rick says during our interview, “It’s always gonna come up. (the emotions.) The trick is to get faster at catching it, and not letting it ruin your life.”

ADHD and the impairments that often accompany it do not have to ruin your life. There are lots of resources out there to help you along. Some of which we discussed in this episode and I will link to them below.
